Your phone rings. It’s the hospital. “Your family member has just come into our Emergency Room…” and so begins a journey of fear and frustration that seems to have no happy ending. More frightening than those words however, are the seemingly premature ones, “Your family member will be discharged today.”
Ask Founder of Our New Journey Anne Ciavaglia McMahon, what led her to establish a sorely needed support program for caregivers. Her response: “desperation was my inspiration.” After speaking with John (referred to her by Anne’s family physician) he expressed his total shock and emotional paralysis with the sudden responsibility of caring for his mother. Anne couldn’t help but come to his aid. She knew that she could share a treasure trove of information, thanks to her many years of professional and personal experiences.

Shop for bargains while helping to give hope and support to families facing a devastating illness or disability on May 30 and 31 during Hasbrouck Heights’ annual Town-Wide Garage Sale. Anne Ciavaglia McMahon, founder of Our New Journey, a project of Heightened Independence and Progress (HIP) will open her yard at 180 Oldfield Avenue, Hasbrouck Heights to offer household items, apparel & accessories, books/dvds, holiday items and children’s goods, with all proceeds benefiting Our New Journey.
Our New Journey is a free service of support for caregivers funded by individual donors and various fundraising activities. Anonymous writes "My name is Anne Brinkers. I am a caregiver to my husband and daughter. My husband had a severe stroke in 2004. He cannot walk or talk. He has a G-tube and a trach. I also have a downs syndrome daughter. I have never met anyone from Our New Journey but contacted them when I saw an article in the Bergen Record on caregivers. That was about two years ago. I feel like I know and am connected with them now. They have been such and inspiration to me. When I couldn''''t get any help with my husband, they found such loving and caring people to help me out. They made nurmerous phone calls and e-mails to places that I couldn''''t get in touch with. They are always there to help me out in whatever I ask of them. They are there with expert advise. When they knew I was so exausted and not sleeping at night because I had to take care of my husband, they coordinated a fund raiser dinner to help hire a qualified caregiver. This meant that I could look forward to a good nights sleep, once a week. I am so grateful for having Our New Journey in my life. They always tells me that I am an angel taking careing of my family but in reality they are the angels by far. God Bless you for all you do.

| MEDICAL ANGELS PROVIDES DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT TO FAMILIES IN NEED |

The mission of Medical Angels is to collect durable medical equipment (DME) and supplies for the purpose of donating these items to people in need. Medical Angels was set up as a 501 c (3) non-profit organization, started by the owners of Premier Home Healthcare. The organization strives to provide equipment that is needed by individuals who have limited access to healthcare coverage or finances.
Medical Angels is in need of wheelchairs (electric and manual), walkers, canes, crutches, safety grab rails, new bedside commodes, shower chairs, hoyer lifts, tub transfer benches, and scooters for redistribution. All accessories must come with power cords and manuals where possible. They CANNOT accept broken or damaged equipment, pharmaceuticals, medications, items from isolated or quarantined patients, needles, anything out of expiration, dismantled beds and medical magazines.

| Archived: Art Center Hosts Exhibit for People with Visual Impairments |

| “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” has been a truism in various languages and cultures for over 2,000 years. But the Art Center of Northern New Jersey has chosen to focus rather on the approach of the Scottish philosopher David Hume who, in 1742, wrote "Beauty in things exists merely in the mind which contemplates them." It has organized and is hosting “Journey through Touch,” a sculpture exhibit tailored to the visually impaired (February 27 thru March 31).
